Description
Block Island Lighthouse Southeast RI Black and White Photo ....
Block Island sits approximately 12 miles south-southeast off the coast of Rhode Island, squarely astride the coastal sealanes. Southeast Lighthouse has stood atop Mohegan Bluff, high above the Atlantic Ocean, since 1875. It is significant as a primary aid to the navigation of an otherwise dangerous area, once referred to as the "stumbling block" of the New England coast. It marks the first island landfall for ships approaching New England from the south or southeast. It was the second light to be built on the island and the first on the south side.
At the time of its completion in 1875 it was considered to be one of the finest and best equipped lighthouses on the east coast, featuring a first order Fresnel lens, the best in lighting apparatus technology. The lighthouse and keepers quarters were meant to be showpieces for the U.S. Lighthouse Bureau and were among the most elaborate built during the 1870s. Constructed of brick, the melding of Gothic Revival and Italianate styles takes form in an octagonal tower. The tower is 52 feet high and the focal plane is 261 feet high. The present optic is a First-order Fresnel originally from Cape Lookout Light, NC.
Southeast Light has been the focus of an intense preservation campaign. Local and national efforts forged a complex partnership to move the structure away from eroding bluffs and restore it to operation, with long-term preservation in mind.
