Description

Central Park New York Gothic Bridge
Gothic Bridge was designed by Calvert Vaux and built in 1864 with the assistance of the Cornell Ironworks Company. This third of the cast-iron and steel bridges around the Reservoir ads a distinctive appearence to the landscape. Located near the north gatehouse of the Reservoir by 84th Street, the height of the bridge allowed the recreational eqestrian traffic to pass underneath. The triangular spandrels at each end of Gothic Bridge were designed with curved ironwork similar to that of the Gothic church architecture of the Middle Ages giving the bridge it's name.
View from bridle path looking southwest - Central Park Bridges, Gothic Arch, Spanning bridle path south of tennis courts at northwest edge of Reservoir, Central Park, New York, New York County, NY.
